Infant Circumcision
0 to 12 months

At WE Kidz Pediatrics, we understand circumcision can be an anxious time for parents. Our goal is to make it simple and comfortable for you and your baby.

When you book an appointment, you will be sent instructions on how to prepare for the circumcision and we will explain to you step by step what to expect from start to finish.

On the day of your son’s circumcision, you will have the option to stay with him during the procedure. First, we give your son sucrose (sugar) to suck on, proven to help with pain in infants. After administering local anesthesia, we wait a few minutes and test him before starting the circumcision, showing you exactly how he does not feel any pain.

The procedure itself takes about 10 minutes. Once we finish, you will be able to put his diaper and clothes back on and take him home. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and answer any questions you may have to make sure your baby is as comfortable as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

- blank -

At what age do you perform circumcisions?

We currently perform circumcisions to infants up to 1 year of age.

What is the best age to perform a circumcision?
While circumcisions can be done at any age, it is best if they are done in the first 2-8 weeks of life.
What method of newborn circumcision do you perform at WE Kidz Pediatrics?
While Dr. Afandi can perform circumcisions utilizing both Mogen clamp and plastibell methods, he prefers the plastibell method. If you prefer he circumcises your child using the mogen clamp, please let our office know.
What is the plastibell (ring) circumcision technique?

The Plastibell method is usually used with young infants and toddlers. After giving the local anesthetic, the foreskin is separated from the head of the penis (glans).

A plastic ring fits around the head of the penis and the foreskin is pulled over the ring. A thread is then tied to the skin. This thread will cut the blood supply from the foreskin which will eventually die and fall off with the ring usually within 3-14 days. It is very similar to the umbilical cord which eventually dies and falls off.

Dr. Afandi prefers using the Plastibell method as it allows for complete visualization of the glans and foreskin before the thread is tied.

Is anesthesia used during the procedure?
Once you book an appointment, we will send you detailed instructions that include giving your baby a dose of Tylenol 30 minutes before the scheduled procedure time. In addition, we use sucrose and local anesthesia to ensure the comfort and safety of your infant.
Are there any risks associated with circumcision?
As with any medical procedure, there are risks, but complications are rare. We discuss all potential risks with parents beforehand.
How long is the recovery time after circumcision?

Most babies recover within 7 to 10 days, but it's essential to follow post-procedure care instructions. If the ring does not fall off within 14 days, please visit us for manual removal.

How much does circumcision cost at WE Kidz Pediatrics?

Unfortunately, OHIP doesn't cover routine circumcisions, so families have to pay for the service.

For newborns up to 8 weeks of age, our circumcision rate is $350. For older age, please visit our circumcision fee page.

Why choose WE Kidz Pediatrics for my baby’s circumcision?
At WE Kidz Pediatrics, we will provide you with detailed information about the circumcision process. You can be present with your baby during the procedure to ensure his comfort. We will be available any time after the circumcision to answer your questions and concerns. If there are any long-term complications (rarely), you will always find Dr. Afandi and his team at WE Kidz Pediatrics.
